The Women's Costume Collection exists primarily as a research study collection documenting the evolution of 20th- century fashion, mainly in the second half of the century. The collection functions as a three-dimensional archive that emphasizes basic design principles such shape, line, texture, color and proportion that apply specifically to wearing apparel and accessories. It is also a rich resource of historic styles, revival fashions, and period details. This collection includes clothing from moderate to high price ranges as well as designer and mass-produced items. Students can familiarize themselves with and compare the various fabric featured, construction techniques and finishes used, and the resulting style or silhouette of each of these categories.
